UKIPO 'Copyright the Future' launch - response from Dame Lynne Brindley, CEO The British Library
In response to IP Minister David Lammy's launch of the UKIPO copyright review, Dame Lynne Brindley, Chief Executive of The British Library said:
"I welcome the Minister's focus on copyright and the call for a roadmap for the future which addresses the challenges presented by the digital age and globalisation. However, I have said in the past that the debate on copyright is too heavily focused on teenagers, music and the consumer industries - and I am concerned that this latest review renews that focus.
"I hope that this review will also cover issues of huge importance to education and to the knowledge economy - and only consider views based on evidence not anecdote. Outstanding issues such as digital exceptions to copyright law, contracts overriding copyright, format shifting, technological protection measures and orphan works all currently stand in the way of creativity and innovation in the UK and beyond. I hope that this review addresses them."
