Catalogues

Books and periodicals in the United Kingdom, as well as the Republic of Ireland, can be traced in the British Library Integrated Catalogue . For information about local access to the Library's catalogues enquirers should consult a librarian in their own institution or their nearest public library. Readers using the Humanities Reading Room can trace modern British and Irish material in the following online catalogues: Humanities and Social Sciences Books and Periodicals (to 1975) and Humanities and Social Sciences Books and Periodicals (1975-).

Access and enquiries

British and Irish material in the humanities and social sciences can be consulted in the British Library's Humanities Reading Room. Access is by reader's pass only and those intending to use the collections for the first time should contact the Library's Readers Admissions Office.

British material held elsewhere in the Library includes official and government publications are held by the Social Policy Information Service. Scientific publications are held by Science Technology & Business. Maps and music scores can be consulted in the Maps Reading Room and the Rare Books and Music Reading Room respectively. Daily, weekly, and fortnightly publications are generally held at British Library Newspapers, but back copies of, for example, The Times on microfilm, The Times literary supplement, and The London review of books are available in the Humanities Reading Room in St Pancras. British books and periodicals in Middle Eastern, Asian and other non-Roman scripts are held by Asia, Pacific and Africa Collections. Unpublished documents, especially correspondence, are held by Manuscript Collections. Recorded sound is kept by the British Library Sound Archive.
